POSTPONEMENT FAQS
The B.A.A. appreciates the support, understanding, and patience from participants of the 2020 Boston Marathon and B.A.A. 5K. See below for some frequently asked postponement questions. We encourage you to refer to this FAQ page frequently for updates.
(Q) When is the 2020 Boston Marathon?
(A) The 2020 Boston Marathon has been postponed to Monday, September 14, 2020.
(Q) I plan to participate on September 14. What do I need to do?
(A) Those who were registered to participate in the 2020 Boston Marathon scheduled for April 20, 2020, will remain as registered participants entered in the 2020 Boston Marathon now scheduled for Monday, September 14, 2020. Those who are unable to participate have the opportunity to receive a refund. All participants were sent an email with more information on April 1.
(Q) I’m unable to participate on September 14. What are my options?
(A) Those who are unable to participate have the opportunity to receive a refund. All participants were sent an email to the address on file with their registration with more information on April 1.
(Q) What is the deadline to accept or reject the refund offer?
(A) The deadline is Friday, May 29, 2020.
(Q) If I choose to receive a refund, what will be refunded?
(A) The B.A.A. will refund entry fees associated with the 2020 Boston Marathon for participants who request a refund by the May 29 deadline. Participants who purchased additional tickets for the Pre-Race Dinner, Post-Race Party, or Unicorn Club will be automatically refunded for their purchases. These will be refunded separately.
(Q) Can I defer my entry to another year?
(A) The B.A.A. understands that some entrants may no longer be able to participate in the September 14 event. Those unable to participate in September may request a refund by the May 29 deadline. We are not offering an option to defer to future Boston Marathons, and hope the refund option will help participants plan accordingly.
(Q) I’m part of a charity team. Are my fundraising deadlines still in place?
(A) Specific questions about fundraising deadlines and timeframes should be directed to the manager of the charity team with which you are affiliated.
(Q) Can I use the September 14, 2020 Boston Marathon as a qualifier for the 2021 Boston Marathon?
(A) The September 14, 2020 Boston Marathon will serve as a qualifier for the 2021 Boston Marathon.
(Q) Can I use a virtual race for the purpose of qualifying for the 2021 Boston Marathon?
(A) The B.A.A. is unable to accept virtual races or GPS data for the purpose of Boston Marathon qualifying times. Only qualifying times from USATF, AIMS, or other foreign equivalent certified courses may be submitted for Boston Marathon registration purposes.
(Q) When is the registration period for the 2021 Boston Marathon?
(A) Registration for the 2021 Boston Marathon will take place after Monday, September 14, 2020. Given the many postponements and cancellations among numerous marathons originally scheduled for spring or summer 2020, the B.A.A. is considering the effect on the registration period for the 2021 Boston Marathon.
(Q) Can I sign up as a new participant for the 2020 Boston Marathon?
(A) Registration for the 2020 Boston Marathon is closed and will not re-open prior to September's race. Registration for the 2021 Boston Marathon will open after September 14, 2020.
(Q) When is the B.A.A. 5K?
(A) The B.A.A. 5K, originally scheduled for April 18, has been postponed to Saturday, September 12, 2020. Participants in the B.A.A. 5K will also be provided with the opportunity to receive a refund and were emailed next steps.
(Q) I signed up as a volunteer for the April 20 Boston Marathon, B.A.A. 5K, and related events. Do I need to register again?
(A) Those who registered to volunteer for the April 20 Boston Marathon, B.A.A. 5K, and related events will remain in the system for the postponed events scheduled for September. We will be in communication with all registered volunteers with more instructions in the future.
