adidas and the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) unveiled today the iconic celebration jacket for the upcoming 127th Boston Marathon. This year’s celebration jacket is made of a minimum 70% recycled content, making it the worthy centerpiece of adidas’ most sustainable Boston Marathon collection ever.
As the Official Footwear and Apparel Supplier of the Boston Marathon since 1989, adidas is proud to continue to bring sustainability to the forefront of this beloved Abbott World Marathon Major. The 2023 celebration jacket features innovative, lightweight fabrics, trims and silhouettes to make athletes feel invincible, run faster and achieve something impossible – all developed with the goal of minimal environmental impact.
“The celebration jacket is an iconic, cherished element of the Boston Marathon,” said Jennifer Thomas, Vice President of Global Sports Marketing at adidas. “As we developed this year’s iteration, we prioritized sustainable design, all while maintaining the high-performance quality adidas is known for. We’re proud to provide best-in-class sustainable running apparel that supports and empowers our athletes in making their dreams come true: chasing records and personal bests while participating in the Boston Marathon.”
As part of adidas’ commitment to keep pushing the boundaries of sustainable offerings by utilizing environmentally preferred materials, the 2023 celebration jacket includes yarn containing 50% Parley Ocean Plastic: re-imagined plastic waste intercepted on remote islands, beaches, coastal communities and shorelines to prevent it from polluting our ocean. Even the jacket colors themselves nod to the intersection of nature and sport by pairing natural tones inspired by sand and stones as a twist on the traditional blue and yellow colors of the Boston Marathon. And as always, the jacket includes the signature B.A.A. unicorn emblem on both the front and back.
“Each and every year, the world eagerly awaits the unveiling of the adidas Boston Marathon Celebration Jacket,” said Jack Fleming, President and CEO of the Boston Athletic Association. “For more than three decades, the B.A.A. and adidas have partnered to create comfortable, innovative and sustainable apparel, with the celebration jacket serving as the centerpiece of the apparel range which all runners cherish. This year’s jacket represents adidas and the B.A.A.’s shared commitment to sustainability while commemorating the accomplishments of our Boston Marathon athletes. This year’s jacket also suggests ‘Boston’ through and through in that the design authentically suggests Boston’s heritage through color.”
The 2023 Boston Marathon Celebration Jacket will be available for purchase online and in Boston for $120 beginning on February 15. This year, adidas will also provide unique volunteer jackets to more than 10,000 volunteers and official Boston Marathon participant t-shirts to 18,000 men and 14,950 women.
